The turn towards observation and mysterious voyeurism in the works of Jan Durina comes after a previous preoccupation with directed photography. Connections between observed reality, substantiality of the moment, personal experience with the photographed persona and the desire to portray mutual relationships simultaneously links us to nature – sleeping trees, force of the wind and the energy of the water. The figures are not just mere human bodies with strong visual energy, they are interconnected by relations and experience – genuine individuals. This connection of intimacy, the exposed human body and poetry of needs, are spoken of in the works of Jan Durina with implicit frankness, almost lightness.

(2015, Petr Hošek)

His images are mirrors of his own inner reality, autobiographical maps of his physical and mental location. Fascinated by the nature and natural absurdity of life itself, Durina explores his tense feelings in his images and takes us on a feral, emotive, visual, and conceptual journey through his contrast-filled world. From this, you can hear silent screams of broken beauty or be charmed by the still gestures of an anxiety that is domesticated but cruel. Jan Durina’s photographs are sleepy images full of symbolism, sensuality, and subconscious meanings. They are portraits of emotional states, sudden shocks, and unending hours of insomnia. Each of the photographs is an analysis of the nature, dynamic, and character of specific moods. A story constructed through a precise composition, a pedantic selection of textures, details, and accents, through the staged gestures of the models. In Durina’s photographs one can hear the song of goddesses turned into birds and the cry of fallen angels as well as the emptiness of a soul seized by insanity.
